An engineered structural protein optimised for textiles comes from a collaboration between AMSilk GmbH and BRAIN Biotech AG

AM Silk GmbH specialises in spider-silk-based proteins, a product that can have applications across sectors such as medicine, textiles and cosmetics. BRAIN Biotech AG provides an R&D service across biotechnology and chemistry. 

All proteins are made from a series of amino acids, alteration of these amino acids will result in the properties of the final protein also being altered. With the use of technology developed by BRAIN Biotech AG, the companies have developed a process which changes the structure of a spider-silk protein. The collaboration has yielded a protein optimised for use in performance materials within the textiles sector. The process has now been registered for a patent.
